“Santana?  Listen.  I understand that what Kurt did when you proposed was totally uncalled for and definitely not at the right time.  I get that.”  He knew he should uncross his arms, smile more. Everything you need to do to make yourself seem less angrier than he really was but–so far? Blaine just stood there–not listening to his own common sense–and tensed from head to toe. At least his words and tone of voice were relatively calm?  “But what I don’t get.  Is how you could be his friend and use me and every little insecurity he has against him just to show him he should have kept his opinions to himself. Yes–he made a serious mistake.  No–he shouldn’t have opened his mouth but you, of all people, should know that you can’t take the parts of someone that they are the most insecure about and use it against them like that.”

“Not when he’s already at a huge low,” Blaine swallowed the guilt he felt for somehow ending up being the biggest reason for said low.  It wasn’t fair that he was the one who ended up here broken and now had trouble looking at himself in the mirror and thinking about Kurt but–here he was doing exactly that.  And now–here he was-–stepping in to be the one to stand up for him at the risk of being on the receiving end of whatever Santana came back at him with.  –Yep.  Here he was. Indeed.–  “He didn’t deserve you going that far and in front of people. In his own way, he was just–.  Okay.  I’m–There are no words.”  His lips pressed together in a thin line before he palmed a sigh and his hand fell back to the crook of the opposite elbow.  “You need to talk to him before both of you lose someone else important to each other.  We’ve all been through that enough already.”

Going back to Ohio felt so much better. Of course, New York was fun and he could never forget all the memorable times he had with his friends (albeit the bad ones), but he felt so much better here than there. Feeling somewhat useful as a temporary fill in as the coach for the football team.

It was a little lonely, however. Everyone had gone off their separate ways. Rachel in New York in her current role of Funny Girl. Kurt in Nyada, Mercedes on tour–God knows where.

Every which way reminded him of the good times. Going to Breadstix alone on Saturday nights– grabbing a coffee to go every morning before going to work. And he was just on his way too when he saw a familiar face in the crowded cafe. His expression torn between excitement and bewilderment.

❝Bro! It’s so good to see you!❞ He said– maybe a little too loudly, but it was so great to see a familiar face again. And he left a tip at the jar before he met up with Blaine.

❝So what brings you here? Taking the day off from school?❞

Blaine stood up and brushed his hands over his plaid suit jacket trying to straighten out the wrinkles–aka fidget with the first thing he could find–as Sam made his way over.  Ridiculous as it was seeing as how who was coming his way should be the last person to make him feel any sort of nerves?

He suddenly picked apart every movement he made to make sure he came off in a way that wouldn’t worry Sam.  His eyes were too bright to damper them for his sake. They always were.

Steady hands clasped Sam’s shoulders and his smile became honest instead of forced the second he heard ‘Bro!’.  "It’s good to see you, too!”  Sam had no idea how grateful he was that it was him standing here.  There couldn’t be a better person in Blaine’s book to run into than his best friend that appeared out of nowhere with unintentionally perfect timing.

“Um–”  The question made his smile flicker into a frown that he attempted to cover up by quickly pulling a chair out for Sam to sit.

“Do you have a minute?  The answer to that question is a bit complicated–Only if you have a minute,” he glanced from the chair to Sam, crunching up his nose and waving a hand like either way was ‘no big deal’.  “If you’re busy and need to be somewhere?  I totally understand.”

“You’re such a sweetheart. I even believe you when you say that,” she joked leaning onto him. Rachel was sure he’d rather have a boyfriend to celebrate with, but she was happy to have the company. “Do not start. It hasn’t even been five minutes and you’re already making me emotional. But, what sweet things are we making? Cupcakes?”

image

“Nope. No tears.  You should believe me.  It’s the truth.  Today’s for you and me this year. I figure I get one chance before someone scoops you up and you’re spending it with the man of your dreams.  I’m going to make sure my once in a lifetime opportunity of a Rachel Berry Valentine’s Day is perfect. One to remember and,” he scrunched his nose in a playfully judgy smirk, “make that guy live up to.”  Blaine had to pick his chin up off the top of her head to smile at her. “Cupcakes?  We can start with baking cupcakes.  I’m even going to buy heart-shaped sprinkles and obnoxiously pink icing.”

she’s my girl today.

“I am so glad you’re here to keep me company. And that I am here to keep you company.
And I am sorry if I suddenly burst into tears, this is a very confusing time in my life.”

“I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be, Rachel.  Or a more perfect Valentine than the one sitting beside me,” he toyed with a lock of long, brown hair and nuzzled the crown of her head. “I’ll do my best to stay dry-eyed.  If you do cry?  I hope it’s because my supreme talent in celebrating today and all the sickeningly sweet things we’re going to do to make each other feel better leaves you with no other option.
