Will knew that they did everything they could, if not more. That was what got to Will even more. He looked at Blaine. He could see how much Blaine was trying to stay strong. He knew because he was feeling exactly the same way.

Will kept his eyes on him and noticed the slip. He nodded as he listened to Blaine. “Thank you.” He said. Will tilted his head to the side a little. “It wasn’t just me.” Will told him. Some of this was Finn as well. He looked back at the others. Tina noticed him and came over to him, hugging him. Of course, she knew. She had noticed on stage just before the results were announced and grabbed a hold of his hand.

“Yeah.  You’re right.  We all worked hard.  Just.  Thanks.  For everything.”  Blaine smiled awkwardly as Tina came over, his face showing concern for her as he looked the girl over.  Letting her have a moment with their teacher, Blaine stepped away after squeezing Tina’s shoulder and giving her a peck on the cheek.  Sam was in his sights.  On lockdown.  Worry filling his eyes when he saw his best friend’s shoulders slumped like all his air was vacuumed out.

“I’m gonna go change.  Make us some dinner reservations.  Meet me back at the hotel?  Or you can come along.”  Not wanting to intrude on Sam’s space if he needed a minute–Blaine stepped backwards and shot Mister Schuester another glance accompanied by a twitch of his lips that was supposed to be a smile and didn’t quite make it.  This should have gone so different.

Will noticed that Blaine seemed a little tense. Of course, he didn’t see his fists as they were in his pocket. He was glad to see him relax a bit when he heard what Will had said. “We will work together.” Will said. He just hoped they could change things when they were back in Lima.

Will looked back over at the others. A few of them were still crying. Some were comforting them. Some were just standing there trying to get their head around what had happened. Will returned his gaze to Blaine. He nodded as he heard Blaine said about going to dinner. “I think that is a great idea.” He told Blaine. “I think it will help us all.”

“Whatever it takes.”  Blaine nodded before looking down at the reflection of the bright backstage lights in his polished leather shoes.  “We tried so hard.  We did our best.  Can’t let them forget that we did everything we could.”  Back teeth clinking together, Blaine’s jaw clenched causing the muscles along it to flinch at the tightness.  For all his put togetherness–his composure was starting to slip the more he felt his heart breaking.  One peek back at Sam again and it was almost undone completely.

Biting into the corner of his tightly puckered lips–he breathed deep and cleared his throat and only for a slip of a few seconds?  His features crumpled and he, finally, appeared like the lost, upset teenager he was doing his best to not think about because the problem was far bigger than what he felt.  “Yeah.  I’ll make reservations.”  He returned his attention back up, the slip gone and an unsteady smile freed the strip of flesh from his front teeth he’d been biting against.  “Thank you for getting us to this point.  It really was something spectacular.”

Will looked at him. “I am not giving up hope. There is hope in here.” He told Blaine. “I am just not letting it build up too much because that is going to make it so much harder if it doesn’t work out.” Will said. He watched as Blaine looked over towards Sam. He could tell they were all hurt.

Will felt Blaine squeeze his arm and looked back at him. “I know we need this. Believe me, I need this.” He said. Will did. Only a year ago, he was thinking about handing the role of Glee club director to Finn, so he could take a step back and do other stuff for the arts and know that the New Directions were in safe hands. But things changed and he realized that he really did need New Directions and this Glee club to keep going. “I’m not giving up.”

Blaine seemed to be hinging upon what Will would say next.  His hands curled into tightly held fists that were shoved into his pockets and his breathing stopped until he heard the answer.  Then a deep one puffed out his chest and made most of his features relax.  All but the weary, tired caution in his usually bright eyes. “Thank you.  We’ll work together.  You know what we’re like when we put our minds to something.  It gets done.  Right?”

Even if they didn’t win.  They got here.  That says something, doesn’t it?  Blaine tried to believe the words he’d said.  Tried.  Actually buying into them one hundred percent was a little harder than he thought.  However, that was for him to battle with alone.  Helping Will help the others stop crying?  That was more important than what he felt for now.  It could catch up to him later.  “We should take them out to dinner.  I’ll ask.  Somewhere nice.  My treat.  They need to know it’s not over.  It’s up to you and me to prove it..”  I need you to help me.

Will had been watching them take in the result. Of course, just after the result, he had been comforting them. But now, while they were comforting each other and he stood nearby, leaning against the wall. He was trying to take it all in. He hadn’t even called Emma yet. What would he say?

He was brought out of his thoughts when he heard Blaine. He looked at his student in front of him. “In the past, I would have hope.” Will told him. “But now…I really can’t see her changing her mind. You know what she is like.” Will said. This year hadn’t been going well at all.

“You can’t give up hope now either.”  Blaine’s attention kept splitting itself between Will and Sam.  Every so soften, his gaze would drift past Will’s shoulder to the boy who looked so broken that Blaine swore there was a hole in the pit of his stomach with how bad it hurt to see him like that.

Reaching over, he gently squeezed Will’s arm and looked directly into his eyes to show how serious he felt about what he was going to say.  “I know what she’s like but we need to figure out something for them.  This is bigger than grudges or bias or games.  This is us we’re talking about here and we need this,” his hurt and frustration was nearly impossible to hide and it was easy to tell he was struggling to keep it in check.  “Don’t tell me you’re going to give up?”

Will stood there watching the New Directions chatting after they came off stage after the results had been announced. He knew what this loss meant. He hadn’t heard anyone come over to him until he heard a voice from beside him. Looking over, he noticed Blaine. “There is always a chance we could lose. I just had so much hope.”  He told him. Will tried to seem positive, but deep down, he was heartbroken.

“I’ll be right back,” he murmured to his best friends.  Blaine gently patted Sam’s shoulder he’d been holding onto and gave the blond a pensive smile.  Tina took over, her arm fit around Sam’s back and she hugged him close.  From the corners of his eyes, he’d caught sight of someone else who was as devastated as they were.  Only.  He was bearing the weight of their loss alone.

There were times when Blaine questioned everything about William Schuester.  But now wasn’t the time.  Instead, he approached him and said the only thing that came to mind.  “We all had a lot of hope riding on this but..I mean.  We’ll find a way.  Right?”  Hazel eyes drifted over every saddened face gathered around.  “We have to.  It can’t be over.”
